Be sure to consider these things before you get started on all the other little details!

Just got engaged and completely overwhelmed with ideas? Sure, you likely have aton of images on Pinterest. Or perhaps you're a little old-school, and have pages ripped from magazines and printed photos everywhere. This is such a fun part of the wedding planning process because these images will help you to understand what you think is beautiful. But the one reason that I always hesitate to recommend Pinterest is because we all have a bit of a tendency to simplycopy. Wedding trends are, well... trends. They might be beautiful for a time, but they usually don't last long. Most brides desire to have a timeless wedding, one they will look back on years down the road and still love. So how do we get to a design that remains true to you? The key is to consider a few important aspects. See, what I really want is to help you stray from simple replication, to create something that is truly authentic. So, check out the five things I recommend you consider when considering your wedding design below!
No. 1 - The Environment
It's easy to get caught up with all the little details and forget some of the bigger things. It's important to consider the environment you will be in when making design decisions. You want your guests' experience in the environment to feel natural, therefore, make sure you choose a style that is cohesive with your venue. I'm not a huge fan of wedding themes, but for the sake of our discussion consider the following examples. If you love the idea of beach themed wedding, it will feel very unnatural if you get married at a golf course. If your dream wedding has always been a lush garden party, then a ballroom likely isn't the best place (although you certainlycanmake it happen!). It's important to consider the surroundings when creating a cohesive design. It's also important for you to consider the colours of the venue as well. That way, you won't have to work against a clashing colour palette and your colours will enhance what you love about your venue. You will be photographed in the space, so consider choosing colours that compliment the surroundings so that everything ties together nicely in photos.
No. 2 - The Season
Just like your wardrobe, your wedding colour scheme can be inspired by the time of year in which you're getting married. Think about the shades you desire to bring out the season in your colour palette. Don't shy away from colours you love though just because of seasonal colour “rules." Think more about what colours are around during that season and modify them to suit your style. If you're going for a soft and elegant vibe but aren't getting married in the spring, consider blushes and golden hues for fall as a softer version of the changing of seasons. If you love darker wintery tones but are getting married in the summer, consider adding a pop of burgundy to your fresh summer palate. I always recommend adding 'muddy' tones to your palate to transition colour. This will really add dimension and depth to your design.
The season will also have a huge effect on your floral selection. Try adding some seasonal perennials or dried elements to your arrangements. This will save you money by using flowers that are in season, and also add some unique textures.
No. 3 - Your Personal Style
It's important to remember to stay true to who you are as a person. Don’t overdo it with too many ideas, or try to do something completely out of the ordinary just to be different, stick with what feels right to you. Your wedding should feel comfortable and familiar to you and your guests, which is why you should consider who you are before make choices simply to honour tradition or your Pinterest board. It's a beautiful thing when you leave and get to say 'Wow, that day was so us!'
No. 4 - Your Senses
Your wedding day is a full experience. That means that your guests will be transported to the place you design via their senses. While the visuals are averyimportant part, don't forget to think about all the other senses too! Guests will not likely remember the little details as much as how they felt. The key to creating memorable details is to add meaning. Ask yourself what you would like your guests to feel. Treating them to a beautiful experience that engages their sense of smell, touch, hearing, taste and sight will enhance their memory of your day-and yours too!
No. 5 - The Story You'd Like to Tell
Consider the story that you'd like to tell with your wedding day. Marriage is not a one day event. It should be the zenith of the beautiful and unique love story that you have shared, but it's not going to end there. This is just the beginning. Try to find something meaningful that you have shared- a treasured item, or an experience - that can tie your design together. Weave elements of your love story throughout your day to create a cohesive vision.
